The Southern Most Smart Ride January, 2006
A 2 day cycling event to raise funds for HIV/AIDS
Pictures and story by Nanci Aruda and Brad Ingrao.
The Southern Most AIDS/HIV Ride began with a
vision. It's third year in collaboration with crew volunteers and over
200 riders. Otherwise known as The Smart Ride, this event came to
fruition to make a significant contribution to the lives of those
infected, affected, or at risk for HIV and AIDS.
The bike ride consisted of two days and 165 miles
traveling from Miami to Key West. Many of the riders seasoned and
trained; others just willing to assist the cause. The event raised over
$357,000 and 100% of the funds went directly to the charities with the
participants maintaining some of the control over the distribution of
their funds. Volunteers provided the entire support to make the ride
possible. Most of the funds were distributed among six community
organizations throughout Central and Southern Florida that provide
support, prevention, and intervention along with outreach educational
resources as well as treatment and research funding.
The Massage Crew consisted of three licensed
massage therapists who performed 100 massages over the course of the two
days, helping the riders to meet their commitments.
Thanks go out to the crewmembers: Travis France
L.M.T from Tampa, Kevin McKenzie L.M.T. from Miami Beach, Nanci Aruda
L.M.T. from Brandon, Ride Director Glen Weinzimer, and to Brad Ingrao
for running the front desk.
Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful
committed citizens can change the world, indeed, it's the only thing
that ever has" Margaret Mead.
With a larger Massage Crew, who knows what we could
accomplish next year. Please visit smartride.org for more information on
becoming a crewmember. |
